2019 Season Preview

Postby Commish » Thu Jan 24, 2019 11:44 am

I was planning to wait until the trading deadline passed before I posted this, but my fans (okay, fine, fan) demanded an early release.

Enjoy!

Good write up mike. I agree we took a step back this season. We took what I consider a big risk and invested 7.5m in salary for players that will be completely useless to us this year, in hopes they’ll bounce back and offer us tremendous value for what we paid. Jake Lamb and Jonathan Schoop I think have all star potential and getting dexter Fowler for 500k was great. Our plan to rebuild has always been centered around our core prospects we started collecting since we joined the league. It will be a long process. Kieboom, Adell, Gore, Whitley and Bart are all in Double A so it’ll still be 2-3 years before we get there impact. Andrew Vaughn won the Golden Spikes award last year and will surely be fast tracked to the MLB when he’s a top 5 pick this June. Patience is a virtue. We likely won’t be signing many Type H players these next few seasons as we try to stay flexible to make a big splash when our core guys come up. I’m still very excited for what this team can become even if 2019 is another rough season for the Hitmen.
Building for the future....Trust the Process

The additions of Verlander and Mikolas (who will also earn a minimum two-year contract at the end of this season) propel the Cleveland Rocks from a 100-loss team to a 90-loss team.

Well done on the preview. Pretty much nailed it with my strategy. Take on no long term money, field a team, hope one of my players has a good season for trade bait next year. Acquire minors guys that will compete in 2-3 years because that's my timeline.

Great job as always Mike. I look forward to this every year after the draft is over.

Personally, I don't think this team is better than last year's, but I certainly hope you're right!

Did you think I was kidding about playing Tyler Flowers at 1B?

How many times will Chris Sale be used as a cover pitcher?

Love the Season Preview!!

re: "There are several usage issues plaguing the starting lineup."

The plan is to play Wilmer Flores and Niko Goodrum as platoon partners at 3B. I won't have to use much of Kyle Seager at all.
1B is comprised of: Freese, Choi, and Tyler Austin. There's enough PA's there for one 1Bman.

I posted your preseason review in the clubhouse.
My boys are now appropriately motivated.
Thanks.

AS always, Great Write Up!

I'll also go out on a limb and predict (as I do every year) that Chicago gets off to a horrible start in Chapter One, John Gill tries to sell every player on his roster, changes his mind, and finishes with a strong second half.

This is a different team. If I get off to a horrible start, then it will be a really long season. usage is the reason for the historical bad starts. I really don't have usage this year. My rotation is lefty heavy, but I do have a solid right hand option in Martinez and Beiber. If a team wants to load up on all righties, I can always bring in Tyler Chatwood who was very effective against RH batters for long relief. M true weakness is my bullpen is not as deep as I would like.

My lineup vs RHP will have EX power in 5 of the first 6 spots with the sole spot having VG power. And depending on who I play at 1B, that could be VG power or EX power in the 7 spot.

One last note. Did anyone else notice that Dillon Maples struck out 75 batters in 39 innings in AAA last year? He did walk 39, but still the 17.46 K/9 is impressive

Great write up, Mike.
I am hoping your prediction for the Hig works out like last season's, completely flipped.
As for us, the pen was slightly overlooked, but it's not horrible: Wilson (.646 OPS), Mayza (.695), Miller (.705). Meh.
Wheeler was my bounce back candidate that turned out better than I could have ever expected. Freeland was a nice surprise.
Hig could be a toss up.

Looks like we will be taking all of our Team Meh merchandise with us on our first trip to Vegas this year. Hopefully, we can unload all of it.

Great read as always! Hope we can repeat. Considered plugging the platoon holes via draft but the price is so much more expensive than right before the deadline so I'll wait until then.

We are going with a 3 man rotation and 3 rotating openers (peralta/cueto/wainwright). Tons of bullpen innings to make it work.

Hanson and Frazier may suck but they will be top 5 qt their positions versus righties. Gurriel will play SS vs LHP, Hanley at 1B, just need a C and 2B
