Kyler Murray going to NFL

Postby Mitch_Gill » Thu Jan 10, 2019 4:28 pm

Scott Boras has said all along he signed a baseball contract with the Athletics and he’s going to honor it. But reports are coming out that Murray will enter the NFL draft. And he’s leaning towards football now. Obviously he can go through the process and withdraw his name. It’s one thing to do both sports as a CB/Safety/RB (Sanders/Bo)... but to be a quarter back!? There’s a lot of time needed to invest to be a quarter back and do another sport. What do you guys think? Would you give up 4million + in a signing bonus for a shot to play both sports? Would you choose to play the premium position of QB over baseball? I’m biased and would totally take the baseball money and run with it. Too many injury issues in football (mostly long term) that would concern me. A lot of early reports suggest he’d be a late first round pick, which could drastically change for better or worse as the draft closes in. Would he be willing to join a team and play backup for a couple years (saints, pats, etc) or would he have to join a team that would give a chance to start out the gate? It’s a shame the raiders are leaving Oakland because wouldn’t that be quite the story if he went there.

Also saw Russel Wilson will be in camp with the Yankees (no news here tho)

And Will Tebow finally get a Big league AB this year?

He won't be able to play both. He's kind of a project in baseball.

He'd make tens of millions on his rookie deal if he goes in the Top 10 in the NFL draft. Gets a lot more comparable to what he'll make in baseball toward rhe end of the first round.

It will really come to a head at NFL combine time. End of Feb, right as spring training is getting underway. Does he go to the combine? That's when he finds put how highly the NFL values him.

I'm not buying it--he is going to do the combine to boost his brand. Break some QB records, get talks of being a top 10 pick then he'll drop it and be a huge brand in baseball.

I don't see him in th NFL. Combine will be interesting.
I agree with Bobby that he is just building his brand up with this declaration.

Way back in my day, players used to play both sports. But they weren’t such limp-wristed pansies back then.

From what I read he’s the same height, maybe shorter than Russel Wilson... but that article also said Wilson is built like a safety and Murray is much scrawnier.

I agree with Bobby he’s probably just branding himself

I'm not sure how you are branding yourself for football if you don't end up playing it. That makes no sense to me.

There is speculation that he will go in the first round in the NFL. If he does, he will probably make more money than he would in baseball. He wont choose until he is drafted in football.

Like Mike Stein said, he will be a bit of a project in baseball. If I were confident in my baseball ability then i would choose baseball because of the long term benefits. But he may have to choose football because of the short term certainty.

I wish someone told Jeff Samardzija to stick with football. Of course he is getting the last laugh having made $18,000.000 last year for contributing 10 starts, 1 W, 6.25 ERA and an -0.75 WAR in 2018.

I think he does both. He’ll take a shot at football and if it doesn’t work out, he’ll go back to baseball. He may just get his football fix in anyway for a few seasons and move back.

He’ll be in demand. New Cardinals football coach is a huge fan and could see him getting chosen by them in the first few rounds, if another team doesn’t take a flier with an extra draft pick.

Guess the Oakland execs couldn’t convince him otherwise

Any decision is far from over. He should absolutely at least see what his value is in the NFL. He could end up getting a MLB contract from the A's.

Whatever he gets from the A's will be less than what he gets in the first round for the NFL

Here's some trivia for Matt Clemm's next game show ...

For which BDBL teams did Kyler Murray's uncle play?

Hint: he played for two franchises, both of which were owned by people still in the league -- but those owners now own different franchises.
