Not-so-great Britton heads to the champs

Postby Mike S./Rocks » Thu Dec 06, 2018 4:42 pm

CLEVELAND -- After collecting $15 million in salary from the Cleveland Rocks the last two seasons for one season of excellent work, Zach Britton will earn his contract's final season's salary from the BDBL World Seried champions.

I'm a clear-the-books deal, the Rocks sent former 0.25 ERA closer Britton and outfielder Tommy Pham to the St. Louis Apostles for 1B Yonder Alonso, P Joe Jimenez, and prospect Micker Adolfo. The Rocks shed $5 million from their payroll -- more if they rid themselves of Alonso -- which was too close to the cap for GM Mike Stein's liking.

"Hated to give up Tommy, as he was our best player last season," said Stein. "Hopefully we can put the saved payroll money toward someone who will make us not regret his loss. And thanks for the great 2016, Zach."

Britton posted a 0.25 ERA and 35 saves in 71.1 innings in 2016. But the Rocks couldn't win even twice as many games as that, and Britton was injured for much of 2017. Pham hit 23 homers drove in 89 runs, and scored 91 more for Cleveland this past season.

"Jimenez could be a part of the next great Cleveland bullpen," said Stein. "We told Alonso not to look for homes in Cleveland, though. Don't think he'll be around long."

Without looking at the stats of any of the players involved, this feels like a very lopsided trade.

Boils down to this for the Rocks -- we saved $6.75 mil on the cap with this trade. Then we were able to add Alonso to another trade that basically saved us $2.85 more. So $9.6 mil shaved off our payroll.

The only long-term player it cost us was Tommy Pham. He's pretty good, but hopefully the extra $9.6 mil we're saving goes to a good cause and we forget we ever had Pham.

Plus maybe Joe Jimenez finally has that breakthrough year. Looked like it for awhile this summer.

I basically paid 7 mil and an all-star young/cheap reliever for Tommy Pham and my new 8th best reliever (and the tiebreaker next year)

Cleveland confirms that it has traded the renamed ZacK Britton to St. Louis:

Never a bad idea for a pitcher to stick a K on the end of his name.
