The weekend began with a bit of controversy as Virginia outfielder Ray Lankford and Chicago outfielder Tim Salmon engaged in a dugout brawl prior to Saturday's home run hitting contest. The brawl began with the two players exchanging heated words and ended with Salmon placing Lankford in a tightly-gripped headlock until Lankford said, "uncle." Both players were immediately reprimanded by Oakville manager Hank Hill, who sent both players to their hotel rooms without supper and promptly replaced both players on the all-star roster. "This here field is no place to have a scuffle," said the frazzled manager Hill as he sipped from a cold beer in the clubhouse following the contest. Neither player was available for comment, although sources indicate the argument stemmed from Lankford's comments on the BDBL Message Board in which he referred to Salmon as an "injury-riddled freak" and used the phrase, "you suck." Speaking of sucking, Lankford was loudly booed by the Glanderdome crowd during introductions to the Home Run Derby. Salem fans, weary of watching the Eck League has-been star strike out in crucial situations game after game, booed Lankford to the point of tears, then followed by chanting "We Want Chad! We Want Chad!" in reference to Chad Curtis, who will be making a triumphant return to Salem later this week. Despite the ugly altercation at the beginning of the contest, the players were still able to put on a good show for the fans. An Eck League team of Jim Thome, Sammy Sosa, Vladimir Guerrero, Manny Ramirez and Ken Griffey narrowly defeated an Ozzie League team of Juan Gonzalez, Albert Belle, Mike Piazza, Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire. Sosa was the star of the day, connecting for eight longballs - the last of which won the contest for his team. Following the Home Run Derby, two teams of top farmhands from both leagues took the field for the BDBL "Futures Game." This contest turned out to be no contest at all, as the Eck League prospects team was forced to forfeit after eight innings of play due to the "mercy rule." The OL's starting lineup of Peter Bergeron, Alfonso Soriano, Nick Johnson, Ruben Mateo, Mike Restovich, Mike Cuddyer, Matt LeCroy and Rafael Furcal demolished Eck League pitching, while the pitching of Jeff Weaver, Mark Mulder, Matt Riley, Ryan Rupe, Byung-Hyun Kim, Scott Williamson and Jeff Zimmerman held the Eck League offense in check. The score was 22-3 when the game finally ended to the relief of a dejected Eck League bench. The Eck League Futures team included a lineup of Pablo Ozuna, Mike Darr, Marcus Giles, Jarrod Patterson, Carlos Lee, Eric Munson, Jackson Melian and Jay Gibbons. Rick Ankiel and Octavio Dotel kept the OL bats in check over the first two innings, but the bleeding began with the emergence of the inexperienced Jason Marquis and Josh Beckett from the pen. Freddy Garcia, Ted Lilly, Randy Wolf and Kevin McGlinchy were unable to stop the bleeding. "We offered to send over Pat (Burrell), Corey Patterson, Joe Crede, Dernell Stenson, Eric Valent, Julio Ramirez, Lance Berkman, Jack Cust, Vernon Wells and Brad Penny," said OL Futures manager John Sickels, Director of Scouting for the Salem Cowtippers. "Hell, we've got more than enough talent to spare. But I guess they were insulted by our offer." On Sunday, the main event proved every bit as exciting as any Major League All-star event (meaning, it wasn't all that exciting.) A capacity crowd at The Glanderdome cheered lustily for Salem all-stars John Olerud, Greg Maddux and Doug Brocail. The loudest boos of the evening were reserved for OL starting pitcher Kevin Brown, who received the starting nod over Maddux due to flagrant ballot-stuffing by Stamford fans. After the first pitch was thrown by Salem Chamber of Commerce President Gus Cowlick, and the National Anthem was sung by local singing sensation Rob Zombie, the Ozzie League all-stars took the field. The starting lineup for the OL stars had a disturbingly Antioch flavor to it. Three of the starting nine belonged to the Butler Division-leading Antioch squad - Derek Jeter, Jason Kendall and Brian Jordan. The Angels were represented by four all-stars overall, the same number represented by Los Altos, Oakville and Southern Cal (after the recent trade of Moises Alou.) Only the New Milford Blazers, who entered All-Star Weekend with a winning percentage lower than Rob Deer's lifetime batting average, were unrepresented. "It just ain't fair," cried one unidentified person wearing a New Milford Blazers hat and carrying a big foam rubber fire hydrant. "The big leagues make sure every team is represented. Why not the BDBL?" When asked to name a Blazer player worthy of all-star status, however, the fan simply walked away with his head hung low and climbed back into his pickup truck with the license plate "BTR3." Chuck Knoblauch led off the game, and with flash bulbs flashing furiously, whiffed on a 1-2 Kevin Brown sinker for the first out of the game. A walk and a single later, Sammy Sosa singled, driving home the runner from third and putting runners on at first and second for Vladimir Guerrero. Immediately, chants of "We Want Maddux! We Want Maddux!" began cascading down upon the field along with several thousand "Greg Maddux Cowchip Candy Bar" wrappers. Despite all the negative vibes being poured down upon him, Brown managed to strike out Guerrero, then coaxed Alou into flying out to center to end the inning. In the OL half of the first the "Pride of Plattsburgh", Craig Biggio, drew a walk against EL starter Roger Clemens. Biggio then stole second and scored three batters later on a bases-loaded sac fly by Bernie Williams. Two batters later, Vinny Castilla doubled to put the Ozzie League All-stars ahead 2-1. In the second, Jason Kendall led off for the OL stars with a single. He was sacrificed to third by Brown, then scored on a Biggio double. In the fourth, Salem fans finally got when they wanted. The bullpen doors opened, and Greg Maddux jogged in from the bullpen. Maddux was so overcome with emotion from the warm reception that he walked the first batter he faced, then surrendered a single to Chipper Jones, putting runners on the corners. But in typical Maddux fashion, Maddux induced the dangerous Javy Lopez into grounding into a 1-4-3 double play, stranding Moises Alou at third. "I was busy chatting with the ball girl," said Southern Cal third base coach Carl Yastrzemski, "and I didn't notice the ball was hit until it was too late. Otherwise, I guess I probably would've sent him there and traded one out for two." Maddux got out of the inning by striking out pinch-hitter Ken Griffey, Jr.. Both offenses then went silent for the next five innings as Maddux, David Cone, Juan Acevedo and Trevor Hoffman shut down the EL offense, while Tom Glavine, Bartolo Colon and Kerry Wood hung goose eggs on the board against the OL's best. There was a moment of excitement in the fifth when EL manager Hank Hill was thrown out of the game for arguing balls and strikes. Hill was later spotted in the dugout disguised as Bobby Valentine. An investigation is underway by the Commissioner's Office, and Hill may face a fine for his actions if found guilty. In the eighth, the OL All-stars added to their lead against Oakville's Chuck McElroy. Larry Walker led off with a double against the lefty closer, and Barry Bonds followed with a fly ball to center. Walker tagged on the fly, and the throw from Griffey sailed into the third base box seats, allowing Walker to score. In the ninth, with the OL clinging to a 4-1 lead, Akron closer Ugueth Urbina was called upon to slam the door. Urbina responded by serving up a double to the first batter he faced, Manny Ramirez. After a strikeout by Scott Rolen, Griffey singled home Ramirez to make it a 4-2 game. The score would end that way, however, as Nomar Garciaparra grounded into a 6-4-3 double play with one out and runners on first and second, bringing to an end the first-ever BDBL All-star game. Craig Biggio, who went 1-for-3 on the day, scored the first run of the game and doubled home the second run, earned the 1999 BDBL All-star MVP award. "This is a great honor," said Biggio. "I am proud to represent the storied blue and green here in the All-star Game. It's an honor just to share this field with so many great players and to be recognized by my peers as one of the best in the game. I'd like to thank my hitting coach, Ted Williams, for making me the hitter I am today." "I think we proved today that the Ozzie League clearly has more talent," said OL manager Kirby Puckett from the Los Altos Undertakers organization. "Those guys never had a prayer."
