November 6, 1999 Salem Crushes Stamford in Game One SALEM, NH - The Salem Cowtippers annihilated the Stamford Zoots in Game One of this intensely-heated Ozzie League Division Series by a score of 11-1. Cy Young candidate Kevin Brown was toasted for seven runs (six earned) on twelve hits in four-plus innings while his main Cy Young competition Greg Maddux turned in a gem, pitching eight innings of three-hit ball. With a packed house on hand to witness this historic event, the Zoots drew first blood in the second inning when Carlos Baerga doubled home Rafael Palmeiro. But Salem came charging back in the third. With two outs and a runner on first, Shannon Stewart mounted a rally with a base hit to center. Quilvio Veras followed with a rare Brown walk, loading the bases for Salem MVP candidate John Olerud. Olerud then ripped a base hit to the gap in left, bringing home two runs and giving Salem an early lead. Tim Salmon then followed with another single, but Veras was gunned down at the plate on the play while trying to score from second on the rifle arm of center fielder Jim Edmonds. That would be enough for Maddux today, as he settled down to pitch six score- less inning after the second, allowing just three batters to reach base the rest of the way. Salem tacked on one run in the fourth on a Steinbach RBI single, then erupted for four runs in the fifth. Stewart led off the inning with a home run and Olerud, Dave Magadan and Maddux all followed with RBI singles. Salem added four more in the sixth on three walks and three hits of Salem punching bag Ramiro Mendoza. "Well, this certainly wasn't what we expected," said Salem manager Mike Glander. "For whatever reason, Brown hasn't done well against us this year, but somehow I thought today would be different. Our offense was just clicking today and Mad-Dog was his usual self."
