November 3, 2000 Litchfield Suffers a Brown-Out STAMFORD, CT - With all the hoopla of Randy Johnson's 400-plus strikeout season and the mid-season addition of John Smoltz, Stamford's original #1 pick, Kevin Brown, has become almost anonymous. Today, Brown reminded everyone that he is still very much a major factor in this team's success. You won't find many post-season performances better than this one: 9 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K, 116 pitches. Brown's counterpart, David Cone, pitched well enough to win (two earned runs through seven innings), but didn't. Today, it was all Brown. Just as they did in Game One, Stamford wasted several scoring opportunities in this game. In the second, a leadoff double by Magglio Ordonez was wasted when Michael Tucker, Edgardo Alfonzo, Brad Ausmus and Brown all failed to advance him any further. In the third, a one out double by Corey Koskie was wasted as well. In the fourth, Stamford once again put a runner on second with none out, but failed to advance him any further. In the fifth, Stamford had runners on first and second with none out, but once again neither runner advanced to third. In the sixth, Edgardo Alfonzo led off with a walk and a stolen base. He actually made it to third - on a ground ball by Brown - but was stranded there when Vizquel grounded out to first for the final out. In the seventh, Stamford had a runner on second with two outs, but Ordonez struck out to end the inning. Finally, after leaving a runner stranded in scoring position for SIX CONSECUTIVE INNINGS, Michael Tucker led off the eighth with a triple. After a walk by Alfonzo, Brad Ausmus brought home the first run of the game with a base hit. Rheal Cormier then came into the game and allowed another run to score on a fielder's choice. That made it a 2-0 game, which was more than enough cushion for Brown today. Brown set down the side in order in the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Litchfield's only scoring threat of the day came in the seventh inning, when Edgar Martinez hit a one out single. With two outs, Martinez advanced to second on a base hit by Erubiel Durazo. Scott Servais then ripped a base hit to right. But for the second time this series, Litchfield third base coach Dave Glander decided to test the arm of Stamford right fielder Ordonez. And for the second time this series, Ordonez saved a run from scoring thanks to his cannon arm. In the ninth, Brown retired Martinez, Barry Bonds and Durazo in order, sealing the 2-0 victory.
