June 17, 2001 Eck League Dominates Third Annual BDBL All-star Game KANSAS - In a season filled with unlikely events (the Gillette Swamp Rats competing for a title, the Los Altos Undertakers stripping their team to build for the future, the Kansas Law Dogs scoring over 600 runs by mid-season, Phil Geisel getting engaged, etc.), today's third annual BDBL all-star game ranks right up there among the most unlikely. Despite sending a far superior team to this exhibition, the Ozzie League all-stars were pounded by the weaker Eck Leaguers by a score of 13-4. The game, held in the hitter's heaven known as "The Fields of Tombstone" in Kansas, featured five Eck League home runs and not a one by the OL stars. With dark clouds hovering above and the game time temperature a crisp 57 degrees, the game began with the heralding pitching match-up of Akron's Pedro Martinez and Salem's Mike Mussina. Neither pitcher disappointed, as the two held their opponents score- less through the first two frames. Martinez, doing his best Carl Hubbell imperson- ation whiffed four OL stars in a row at one point on his way to a five-K day. But while Mussina was pulled in the top of the third in favor of pinch hitter Will Clark (who became Victim #4), the honorary Eck League manager (Chicago Black Sox skipper John Gill) blatently ignored the time-honored, unwritten code of all-star etiquette by allowing his starter to pitch a third inning. Martinez was on his way out to the mound to start the fourth when Ozzie League manager Jeff Paulson called a time out and finally put a stop to the showboating. By then, though, it was too late. Because in the bottom of the third, Salem starter Bruce Chen had given up four runs on a walk to the pitcher, Martinez, a double and back-to-back home runs to Cleveland second baseman Roberto Alomar and Chicago star Manny Ramirez. Of course, no four run lead is safe in the Fields of Tombstone. Sure enough, as soon as Martinez finally exited the game, the Ozzie League began to rally their way back into the ballgame. South Carolina ace Roger Clemens was brought in to pitch to two batters, yielding a walk and a base hit. Kentucky ace Tim Hudson then served up back-to-back RBI doubles to Jeff Kent and Tim Salmon. That cut the EL's lead to 4-3. Unfortunately for the Ozzie League, the Eck League got it all back right away. In the bottom half of that inning, Bear Country ace Hideo Nomo entered the game to face the bottom of the EL lineup. With two outs and runners on first and second, Ramirez drove home his second run of the game with a double. Chicago Triple Crown threat Carlos Delgado then drove home two with a base hit. Kansas catcher Ivan Rodriguez then added another run with yet another double. Four runs in the inning gave the EL an 8-3 lead. The EL then added two more in the fifth on a two-run homer by Derek Jeter off Randy Johnson. After a sac fly brought home an OL run in the sixth, the Eck League scored once again on three consecutive base hits off the Unit. A pair of Eck League solo shots (Darrin Erstad off Todd Jones and Jim Edmonds off Robb Nen) added insult to injury in the eighth. Jeter, who went 3-for-6, with a homer, three runs scored and two ribbies, was named the game's MVP. After the game, Jeter immediately packed his bags and headed over to the Ozzie League lockerroom to join his new teammates, Barry Bonds, Edgar Martinez and Will Clark. Unfortunately, though the game was televised, no one was able to see what was happening, since ESPN was using their new "down the middle" camera angle.
