November 6, 2001 Ryche Romp Over Redman SOUTH CAROLINA - With the Division Series tied at two games apiece, South Carolina looked to Mark Redman to keep them in the game against Akron ace Pedro Martinez. Unfortunately for the Sea Cats, Redman just wasn't up to that task. Through 6 2/3 innings, Redman yielded seven earned runs on eleven hits and three walks. Martinez was his usual brilliant self, pitching six shutout innings while allowing just two hits and two walks, and striking out eleven. Akron wasted no time tagging Redman. The first four batters of the game all connected for base hits - two singles and two doubles - accounting for two quick Ryche runs. In the second, the same four hitters got on base again, resulting in a three-run two-out rally. That was more than enough runs for Martinez. After throwing just 83 pitches, Martinez left with a 5-0 lead heading into the seventh. Once he left, South Carolina scored three runs off Akron reliever Mike James, but the Ryche scored four more times in the seventh and eighth to put the game out of reach.
