Topic: Draft Commentary --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-29-01 08:11 PM BDBLcommish Only three picks into the draft and my mock draft was wrong already! Brett Boone over Robbie Alomar?? Anyone else shocked by that one? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-29-01 08:14 PM Mike S./Rocks HA! Now you know why the Cleveland Indians traded him! (And why the Cleveland ROCKS might get him back!) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-29-01 09:27 PM AZHeat Yes, I am! Brett is good, but Robbie is great! I would of loved to have him. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-29-01 10:13 PM IRISH REBEL Fact of the matter is Brett boone was rated VG at second base while Alomar was only average. As for offense, there overall numbers are similar with the exception that Boone has more ABS than Alomar. I will take defense over speed given my emphasis on pitching. Besides, Boone is younger and I do not plan on keeping Boone for more than one year anyway.... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-29-01 10:27 PM Shark I would have been happy with either of them. Boone gives you Vg range and Ex power. Alomar gives you speed, OBP and switch hitter. Boone is a #4 hitter while Alomar is a #2 or #3. I think you can make an argument for both of them. Personal preference. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-29-01 10:28 PM Shark ".....And why the Cleveland ROCKS might get him back!" Open discussions for Alomar's services already? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-30-01 11:09 AM fmimes Oh man, I was going to make the stunning pick of Chavez. I hate Jeff. (It's not you I hate Jeff, it's your draft selections) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-30-01 11:12 AM fmimes Now I'm relegated to "really stupid pick" status. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-30-01 11:29 AM Rÿche This is what makes our drafts so interesting...and so hard to prepare for. There's almost no telling what will be available when I finally get a chance to make a pick! Maybe you should try and do another mock of the second round now Mike?! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-30-01 11:38 AM Rÿche That's another thing about our drafts, there always seem to be those guys who think along the same lines as you and are always picking "your" guys just when you are about to. I sure am glad I have the spot right in front of Mike instead of right behind him! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-30-01 12:00 PM Mike S./Rocks Maybe Chavez isn't worth 10 mil right now, but he could very well be by the end of the 2001 season. He might have the most upside of any big money player available right now. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-30-01 12:06 PM fmimes I don't know if I would want Mike behind me but if you're comfortable with it and he's not intoxicated you should be o.k. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-30-01 02:49 PM STMZoots I just want to know where the biggest "eager beaver" of them all might be now that Los Altos has picked... Anyone heard from the Shark? I figured he would have the board forwarded to his beeper... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-30-01 02:53 PM Ridgebacks He just appeared on my AOL IM buddy list (I guess he was logged on). I figured I'd wait to see his pick but then he logged off. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-30-01 04:05 PM Undertakers I hope Mike Stein is right. I had Chavez pegged all along. I think besides Mussina and Johnson, he has the most potential to be worth $10 million (we shall see). Besides that, he just fit into my plan. Sorry about picking him up Brain! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-30-01 04:52 PM BDBLcommish I just checked my old e-mail, and The Shark is at a "baby-naming" ceremony today. The truly ironic part of this is that he's usually the one screaming the loudest when people don't leave lists when they know they'll be away from their PC for the day! Classic Shark! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-30-01 05:05 PM BDBLcommish I never pegged Chavez as a $10m player, simply because I don't think he's reached that level yet. Although if you compare his numbers to another well-known $10m 3B, he's apparently already there: Chavez: 552 AB, .288/.338/.540, 878 OPS, 107 RC Rolen: 554 AB, .289/.378/.498, 876 OPS, 112 RC If he's a one-year keeper only, then the pick makes less sense, as there are better hitters still on the board (namely, Palmeiro and Martinez.) The best part about this pick is that this probably means that Stamford won't end up with Edgar as predicted. The bad part is that Marlboro now picks Jamie Moyer, whom I will have to face eight times this year. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-30-01 05:44 PM fmimes I'm snagging one of them (Raffy or Edgar). They can play 1b, 3b or LF in hallowed Herman Franks Field. Or, maybe I'll pick former Mime.... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-30-01 05:52 PM Mike S./Rocks What the heck is a baby-naming ceremony? Sounds like something out of Seinfeld. Does everybody suggest a name and they throw them in a hat, then draw out the name? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-30-01 05:56 PM FireAnt Baby naming?? Let me guess the family member with the least number of children gets the MOST ping-pong balls with there choice for name on them. Then they have the drawing....thus naming the baby. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-30-01 06:05 PM Shark It is like a Christian Babtism for a newborn. My wife is Jewish so we had a "naming" for our son (and my other, older son as well). Basically, you pick a deceased relative and take their "jewish translation" of their name and give it to you child. That is your religious teachings for the day..... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-31-01 10:31 AM BDBLcommish Well, whoever picked "nine" in the BDBL poll for the number of players taken in Round One, it looks like you're the winner! I guess I underestimated the vast amounts of money that is available to everyone this draft. Other than Johnson and Mussina, and possibly Alomar, Sheffield and Chavez, I think all the others will be thrown back into the pool next year - which makes the 2003 draft even deeper than what we already knew it would be! For this reason, I think we definitely need to establish a new rule that any player drafted for $10m or more must be signed to at least one more year. Otherwise, we're going to see nothing but one-year rentals every year. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-31-01 11:02 AM Shark If you go to an auction draft next year, this wioll be a none issue because guys like me with $37m to spend will definately up the ante for a Johnson or Mussina and pay well above $10m. If we keep it the current way, yes, this will happen every year, especially if you are "lucky" to have really good heap players that allows you to draft 1-2 $10m "one-year" players to help you this year. But is that a bad thing? As an example, the Zoots traded for his "one-year" rentals in Clemens and Edmonds. What is the difference? If you have the money then you can do what you want with it. Can you really make someone sign a $10m player to a 1 year contract as a punishment? That really isn't fair. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-31-01 12:16 PM BDBLcommish If we go to an auction draft, the issue becomes even more relevant. Which player is more likely to be dropped the following year: a $10m Randy Johnson or an $18m Randy Johnson? If we allow owners to spend more than $10m, then there should be some risk attached. Otherwise, we'll have this revolving door of superstars that will be free agents every single year. (By the way, a $10m Hideo Nomo???) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-31-01 12:25 PM Mike S./Rocks You can either spend it or wish you spent it. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-31-01 01:01 PM Shark Well, After Johnson and Mussina, there was Moyer, then there was Nomo, then there was, uh, ugh...... who is after Nomo anyway? Hey, can't win without starting pitching and Nomo was the next best - and great to have those strikeout pitchers. Hey, I am POed because I would have taken him at #7 $5m in a heart beat but he would never have made it there. There is just NO pitching in this draft, none at all. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-31-01 04:48 PM fmimes The Sea Cats by adding Klesko, like the Mimes, will have two firstbasemen in their regular lineup. Interesting draft, according to my calculations after the Erstad selection, Manchester has $6.7 mil to spend on 16 players. To their favor, they have all positions "filled" except catcher. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-31-01 04:53 PM BDBLcommish It seems like a lot of teams are drafting with the sole purpose of trading in mind. I can definitely say we've never had a draft like this one before. Manchester's "all-defense" strategy is interesting as well. I thought Erstad would drop to me with the 23rd pick of this round, but he ended up getting picked WAY ahead of some much better players - I assume because he's an Ex in center field. ** Update: I just read New York's post, and it looks like Erstad would have gone right after Manchester. Guess I underestimated him. (The good part is that with every one of these types of players chosen, my pick gets better and better!) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-31-01 05:32 PM Predators Since I traded away my first two picks I've been nothing more than a spectator thus far. Because of this I thought that I'd share my "Biggest Draft Shocker of the Year Award" with you. Normally you have to assume that this would come out after the draft was complete but to me this is a no-brainer. Not that I had plans on selecting him but Hideo Nomo picked as a first rounder to me is the biggest shocker thus far. I had him pegged in the 3.0 million dollar range at best with those 96 walks in 198.0 IP. That being said, the 220 K's looks awfully appetizing. But I suppose the Shark is correct when he says that there is hardly any starting pitching available in the draft and that is what I'm assuming made the Rocks take him when they did. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-31-01 05:53 PM BDBLcommish This draft has been nothing but one shocker after another. My top five would have to be: 1. Nomo at $10m. 2. Chavez instead of Moyer. 3. Erstad as the 12th pick in the draft. 4. Boone over Alomar. 5. Klesko chosen by the Sea Cats. I'm not saying these were bad picks - just surprising. I don't think Cleveland is planning to compete this year, so I'm assuming that Nomo will be trade bait down the stretch. My only question is whether better bait was available if that was the reason for picking him. Chavez for Moyer makes sense if: a) Los Altos feels they have enough pitching already to compete (which I think they do), and b) they intend to keep Chavez beyond this year. I did a little research (very little) and couldn't find any player chosen in the 2nd round of any of our past drafts who had a lower OPS than Erstad (691 OPS.) Last year, Sandy Alomar (728) came close, but only one player has ever been chosen in the $5m rounds with a lower OPS, and that was Charles Johnson (670) by the Blazers during our Inaugural Draft. I'm still surprised by Boone over Alomar, not because I think Alomar is the better player (they're very close), but because of the trade that led up to that pick. With this pick, Jim has basically stated that Brett Boone is $2m better than Chipper Jones. I just have a tough time coming to grips with that one. I've been waiting for weeks to see who the Sea Cats would select with that #2 pick of the second round, since he traded Clemens and Edmonds for it (and prospects.) I figured he must have had someone in mind when he made that deal. With Sweeney already at first, and Johnson tagged as the franchise's first baseman of the future, I didn't expect Klesko. But again, he's one of those guys who can be traded down the road, and will probably reel in some good prospects. Okay, I'll shut up now. Guests will be arriving in an hour, and I guess I should get off my ass before my wife leaves me. Happy New Year, everyone! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-31-01 06:33 PM Mike S./Rocks With Nomo, the Cleveland Rocks have reversed their ways and now have a semi-decent pitching staff: Al Leiter Hideo Nomo Livan Hernandez Pat Rapp Roy Halladay Joel Pineiro I might even be able to add another arm soon. No Mussinas or Big Units, but those guys will help keep all you clubbers in line somewhat. They will have to, since I have no offense yet. That's 962.2 IP with a 4.15 ERA. Last year's Eck League ERA champ was South Carolina at 4.22. Plus I still have $22.8 mil to spend at the draft, so the fact that Nomo is $10 million doesn't mean much. He wouldn't be on my team at any other price cause he wouldn't be available. I have 19 players to go, similar to Salem's situation ($26.8 mil for 20 players) and better off than Chicago ($13.8 mil for 20 players). Of course, what I kept isn't as good as those teams, but I'll find some players. And maybe returning to Dodger Stadium turns Nomo back into a god! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12-31-01 09:40 PM SeaCats In response to Mike's stunning picks post. Klesko certainly wasn't who I had in mind, but none of the other guys available were who I had in mind either . I really wrestled with this pick...trying to decide on a lesser player that filled a need or going with who I thought was the best player available...in the end I took what I thought was the best player. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-01-02 02:28 AM Undertakers It is now 11:30 on the West Coast and I finally have internet access. After several beers... this may not make much sense...but I thought I would post in response to me passing on Moyer. Honestly, I never ever considered Moyer with that pick. It was all offense all the way. The tough debate for me was whether to take Chavez or Palmerio with that pick since I needed a first baseman. There were quite a few 1B still available so I thought Chavez (who I will probably offer a long term contract to) was a bit better. I was fortunate to get Millar in the 2nd round. But I never ever considered Moyer with that 1st pick. I'm suprised that people are suprised. Jeff --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-01-02 11:24 AM fmimes So far Jeff you have snagged both players I had pegged for my team. I guess my only recourse is to enact revenge on the diamond. :O --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-02-02 04:11 PM Undertakers Come get some Brian! ============================================================================================= Topic: ROUND TWO COMMENTARY --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-01-02 08:14 AM IRISH REBEL With regard to my two picks, I would rather have Brett Boone and Ryan Dempster with flexible contracts than Chipper Jones and his long range contract. As for Erstad, he had an off season last year yet could be a great long term pick given he has all the tools with the exception of power hitting. Even with his off year, Erstad has a decent OBP against RHs and provides excellent defense in CF and very good defense at 1B. After losing countless games due to lack of ptiching and defense, I think I will be in better shape overall than last year with the change in philosophy and ballpark. Just maybe the Mariners have the right idea about how to build a ballclub. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-01-02 08:31 AM Shark Hey, don't defend your Erstad pick. I let him go and had to eat $3.5m but was hoping to get him back in the $5m round. I had NO idea that you and a few other teams would have taken him this round as well. I think he is a very good $5m player and has upside next few years, just wasn't a good $7m player. I took Alomar after you took Boone and to be honest would have been happy with either one of them. I look at both as 1-year players (unless they both have outstanding years after age 32). Just different types of players. Power vs. Speed & OBP. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-01-02 11:13 AM SeaCats The draft list posted in the round 2 thread is incorrect. The Sea Cats do not pick 16th in round 2, as that pick has been traded away. Just didn't want any confusion. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-01-02 01:15 PM Predators Shark - Maybe I'm on an island here all alone, I don't know. I'm curious about your last comments about Erstad. Why would you ever consider releasing Erstad and take a 3.5 million dollar hit to the salary cap only to want to redraft him at hopefully 5.0 million this season? Maybe I'm a little bit warped here but that would seem to tie up 8.5 million (3.5 in penalties + 5.0 in new salary) when you had the guy for 7.0 million to begin with. Hey, I just woke up and maybe I misunderstood what I read from you. We may have been in the same boat with overpriced veterans, but obviously elected to go two different directions. I have Dustin Hermanson at 7.0 million this year in the last year of his contract - exactly the same situation you had Erstad. The difference of course is that there is virtually no starting pitching in the draft where as there is several decent first basemen and centerfielders. So I elected to keep Hermanson and absorb the 7.0 million (which he is not even close to being worth) rather than be short a starting pitcher and not have a pick until the minimum of the 3rd round. Now I'll be able to address other concerns of my team when the time comes. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-01-02 03:01 PM Shark Erstad is worth $5m for at least 2 years - this year and his option year. Thats all. To me I needed the $3.5m cap space (1/2 his $7m salary) to be able to take 2 $10m players and it worked out for me. I never really wanted to drop him (I liked his defense in CF and potential over the next 2 years but that potential was no good to me because he was in the last year in his contract. I figured buy dropping him I could save $3.5m for the draft and take him again at $5m (maybe - depending on the quality of players at that spot) and get to keep him for at least 2 years at $5m. When those extra 4 players went in the 1st round I was definately going to take him back but missed out. 2 owners in front of me were going to take him anyway. I basically dropped him (w/ a penalty to 1) free up some cap room and 2) maybe pick him up cheaper. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-01-02 03:53 PM Predators Obviously we have two totally different views on how to have handled this situation which is what makes this league so appealing. Appropriately enough, your opinion is the only one that counts though. Don't take this as me attacking you or anything, I'm just talking and waiting until I can finally get a pick in. As a team owner, I just find it hard to justify taking the 3.5 million dollar cap hit just to attempt to redraft him for 5.0 million, that's all. It sounds like government economics to me. He may not have been worth 7.0 million this year, but if that's the case, he sure wasn't worth 8.5 million this year either - which is what you would have been paying for him if you had been able to redraft him, option year or not. Where is Rick Reuschel with his "...what the heck, it's your team," comment? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-02-02 03:49 PM Predators Seeming that I hit the Sharks pretty hard, maybe I should visit the Zoots camp for a little bit. What's this? Tony Clark? I think that the Zoots are floundering a little bit. Not much though, it is the Zoots after all. Personally, I think with Edmonds playing in his last year of his contract, I would have gone with Torri Hunter and played him in center field. Edmonds qualifies at first base and Hunter could have patrolled the vacated spot in center. A minor hit defensively, but in the long run Hunter is the better player for the Zoots to have over Clark. Just my opinion though. I'm trying to keep myself entertained while I wait for the crumbs of the draft to trickle down to me. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-02-02 03:50 PM novamustangs I think it's funny that all these teams are drafting 10 mil or 5 mil players and are in pain because they know that whomever they are drafting isn't worth the salary. Yet we keep drafting them....we're in fear that others will overpay so an individual owner feels the need to overpay. Should be interesting to see how this whole thing plays out with respect to next year's draft or AUCTION (please, please,please...) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-02-02 03:52 PM BC_Jamboree At this point, I'll be lucky to get Stubby Clapp for $5 million!!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-02-02 04:02 PM Mike S./Rocks It will be interesting to see who teams overpay for in the $3 mil and $2 mil rounds now that the players they thought they would get there will be loooooooooooooooooong gone. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-02-02 04:28 PM STMZoots I have already said, several times, the Zoots are crumbling. I can't help it if the Commish sees it otherwise. I'll just keep trying my darndest and let the chips fall where they may (the good lord willin' of course -- that was for Mike). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-02-02 04:39 PM fmimes Paul - Stop saying these bad things about your team, it makes me feel bad for taking the players I did. Keep your chin up champ, after the draft we can make that Jeff Bagwell for C.J. Nitkowski deal. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-02-02 04:59 PM BDBLcommish Torii Hunter: .261/.306/.479 Tony Clark: .287/.374/.481 If you think Torii Hunter is a bigger asset than Tony Clark, then we need to talk trade immediately! If Torii Hunter goes for $3m or more in this draft, then we know that we have sunk to a whole new level. Clark at $5m is not a bad pick at all, especially considering what's left out there. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-02-02 05:19 PM Ridgebacks Has anyone been in touch with Phil since the draft started? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-02-02 05:24 PM BDBLcommish Yes, and the good news is that he's aware that we're having a draft. I just left a message on his answering machine, but he usually works pretty late. I'll try him again later tonight if he hasn't picked yet. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-02-02 09:36 PM Shark So Chicago chooses Keith Foulke Nice pick.......... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-02-02 11:32 PM BDBLcommish Only two more picks and he would've been mine. So close, yet so far. I wonder whether Durham would still be around for my pick if I had chosen Foulke instead. Maybe I don't want to know... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-02-02 11:54 PM Mike S./Rocks Foulke or Nen? Foulke or Nen? That was my dilemma this round. You probably can't go wrong with either. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 03:09 AM Predators Okay, so maybe I didn't look at the Clark/Hunter comparison too closely before I opened my mouth. I think what I was trying to point out was that I think that in the long run Hunter might have been the better pick. Clark has been a disappointment over the years while Hunter is coming into his own. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 08:11 AM STMZoots I guess time will tell on Hunter. I personally am not a fan. Clark is going into a much better situation in Boston than he had in Detroit (including a MUCH better hitters stadium; Comerica was a -54% for RH HR's last year). The wild card is health. If he is healthy, I think he'll hit 35 HR's this year. I'll take that in a heartbeat considering what was left on the board and the fact that I have Edmonds AND Nixon to play CF. Just a different opinion. That IS one of the things that is so fun about this league. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 08:28 AM Black Sox Durham would have had to pass through Kentucky and I am guessing Bobby would have taken Durham instead of Biggio. Durham is 5 years younger with more pop and speed and he is a switch hitter. Foulke has a higher rotissierie value, but that is because of saves. You can still pick Chad Fox or Jason Isringhausen and come out better than Foulke and Biggio. Thats my opinion. An I am sure that was your thinking when this decision was made. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 02:11 PM novamustangs I'd just like to comment that it's a really good idea that Mike or someone keep a posting at the top of a draft thread and keep updating it with picks as Mike is doing in Round 3.... helps keep people organized. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 02:16 PM BDBLcommish Okay, I'll continue to do that going forward. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 04:24 PM STMZoots Please. Somebody pick. Anybody. I'm going through serious withdrawal here. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 04:34 PM Ridgebacks With the first pick of the old time sitcoms draft, the Allentown Ridgebacks select Sanford and Son. Perth is on the clock. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 04:38 PM BDBLcommish I'll call Billy when I get home and remind him that we're having a draft. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 04:39 PM BDBLcommish Okay, I'm dying to know... Would anyone have picked Robin Ventura in Round Six? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 04:46 PM FireAnt It probably is pretty obvious but I would not have picked him in Rnd 6. I already have Cirillo at 3b and I have needs else where. Don't worry though Mike I'm sure someone would have taken him ahead of you if you hadn't grabed him in Rnd 2. Don't beat yourself up over it to much. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 04:47 PM Predators I was going to take Ventura with my first 1.0 million pick. I thought for sure he was a sleeper that could fill the 3rd base hole I'll have in 2003. I don't know if I would have taken him as high as you did but that's okay. You had a glaring hole at third base and it was either Ventura, Aaron Boone or David Bell. Considering the circumstances, I can see the logic behind the pick although it was done pretty early on. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 05:14 PM BC_Jamboree Hey Paul... If it was my turn, I'd pick for you..... Actually, I don't know about those of you who sit in front of a computer all day like I do, but I find myself checking ALL the time... I am getting no work done. I even refresh the page 3 or 4 times in a row sometimes...I think it sucks having to be on the interent for 9 straight hours hoping for just 1 pick. It must be easier to not be in front of the computer all day and then just check every so often... Here I go again... Getting no work done. Guess I should just close the browser all together. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 05:16 PM STMZoots Thanks Matt. If it makes you feel any better, I'm in the same boat with being in front of a computer all day. I keep it minimized, but I have the Forum up all day waiting for that next pick. Are we pathetic or what?!?! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 05:16 PM Mike S./Rocks Hey, I'm paying $3.5 mil to NOT have Robin Ventura on my team! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 05:25 PM Predators I know what you mean about hanging out waiting for the next pick. At least most of you can claim to have made at least one pick. What makes it even worse right now is that I was talking to the Ridgebacks on AOL IM earlier today when the Blazers popped online. They were there for about 30 seconds or so and then were gone again. Then while I was typing this message, he did it again! If he just would have picked/passed in one of those 30 second spans we'd be rolling again! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 06:08 PM Ridgebacks At least I feel better knowing that I'm not the only person checking in all the time. I feel like much less of a geek now. Thanks. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 06:11 PM fmimes As far as old time sitcoms go, Tom is right, I nominate Sanford and Son. When does the vote for musical cop shows happen? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 06:44 PM BDBLcommish Top Five Sitcoms of All Time: 1) The Simpsons 2) Cheers 3) All in the Family 4) Seinfeld 5) M*A*S*H Close runner-up: Taxi. (See how boring it gets when there hasn't been a pick in eight hours?) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 06:57 PM Ridgebacks To me, Taxi is the clear winner. The other night the Taxi episode with Jim Ignatowski in college was on some cable channel. Absolutely hilarious. Some other shows I really miss: Welcome Back Kotter (Ba-ba-ba Ba-ba Barino) Different Strokes Alf (was I the only person who thought Alf was kind of funny?) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 07:01 PM BC_Jamboree Top 5 sitcoms of 2002: 1) The Simpson's 2) Malcolm in the Middle 3) That 70's Show 4) Everybody Loves Raymond 5) Titus Although, I have not seen "Inside Schwartz" yet...Is that any good? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 07:01 PM Mike S./Rocks I loved Alf! Of course I was about 15 when he came on. Over the holidays I saw some Alf Christmas special for about 2 minutes and it looked really, really bad. Doesn't the guy who played Willie on there play some drunk on a current sitcom? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 07:13 PM SeaCats 1. Cheers 2. All in the Family 3. Seinfeld 4. Wings After that it's all a blur of Different Strokes, Family Ties, Growing Pains, etc. Oh yeah, I thought the first season of Third Rock was good. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 07:24 PM Ridgebacks I've been reduced to writing about Alf. I vote for a swift and severe punishment for anyone who allows the draft to stall for more than 3 hours. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 07:57 PM FireAnt I don't have an "always on" internet connection but I may as well have because I dial-up about every 30 minutes to check the draft. I have manually typed in all the changes to the draft into the DMB draft tool and have been following along the whole way. AND I STILL HAVE NOT MADE A PICK YET!!! Top 5 Sitcoms: Cheers Senfield M*A*S*H All In The Family Night Court --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 09:04 PM BDBLcommish FYI: I just spoke with Billy and he says he'll be making a pick shortly. He also said we all need to get a life. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 09:24 PM Mike S./Rocks It's 27-0 Miami FL already. What kind of life are we supposed to have when the championship game is a blowout????? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-03-02 09:28 PM Ridgebacks If he passes, can we form a posse and hunt him down like a criminal? Just wondering. ============================================================================================= Topic: Round Three Commentary --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 04:21 AM Predators I just wanted to clarify for some of the league owners that it is not necessary for you to draft someone in each round. It appears as though some of us may have not realized this to be true. Terry Adams is now supposedly worth $5.0 million in our league? No wonder that pick was made in the middle of the night when he thought nobody was watching. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 06:03 AM Shark Boy, next year's draft gets better and better with all the talent available (when ALL these players are dropped) In regards to the last pick....hey...if you have the money might as well take best player available. Rather that then end up with $5m on the table after the draft. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 08:16 AM novamustangs I find it kinda interesting cause if there were an auction this year for free agents, I'd bet Randy Johnson may have gone for over 20 million. It wouldn't have surprised me. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 08:31 AM Mike/Rocks And you think real baseball owners wouldn't spend the money just cause they have it? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 09:10 AM BDBLcommish It's all supply-and-demand, my friends. Why do you think Chuck Knoblauch and Mike Lansing get $6 million per year? Because they're worth it? That's why Marvin Miller was a genius. He figured out that if you spread out the free agents in small groups, year after year, they'd get more money than if all players became free agents every year. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 09:54 AM BDBLcommish If nothing else, after witnessing that third round, I can honestly say I am SO glad I picked Ventura! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 01:28 PM Black Sox I am so glad I PASSED in rounds 1,3,4,and 5. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 01:30 PM BDBLcommish Why's that? There is literally nothing left to draft (at least for this year), and there's still a ton of money out there just waiting to be spent. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-05-02 01:19 AM Mike S./Rocks How's Hideo Nomo for $10 mil look now??? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-05-02 03:31 AM BC_Jamboree I was actually hoping to NOT take a $5 million pick. But my staff only had 2 starters at the time. With Johnson, Mussina, Moyer, Nomo, Reed, Bere, Williams and Ortiz taken, I was left with 3 pitchers with numbers that were decent (if not unspectacular): Wakefield, Adams and Castillo. If I skipped in round 3, then I believed those 3 pitchers would not be around for my round 6 pick (#17) and sure enough Wakefield and Castillo were quickly added after I took Adams. Such is the draft this year I suppose.... ============================================================================================= Topic: Round 6 Commentary --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 01:42 PM STMZoots And the quest to build the best defense in the history of the BDBL continues -- Brad Ausmus to Manchester. Hmmm. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 01:43 PM Mike/Rocks Now, who was that doing the complaining about the $5 mil and $10 mil picks??? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 01:45 PM BDBLcommish Paul - in retrospect, I guess I was overreaching with Girardi, huh? Hee hee hee!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 03:39 PM Predators Should we start naming the top sitcoms again? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 03:57 PM BDBLcommish This is Bobby's pick, and he didn't leave a list. So I wouldn't keep checking the board all that often for picks, as I'm not even sure if he's home from school yet. I left him an e-mail, so he knows he's up (if he's checking his mail, that is.) In general, if it's Bob's, Bobby's, Geisel's or Billy's turn to pick, and it's in the middle of a weekday, I wouldn't count on a pick being made until that evening at the earliest. They don't have internet access during that time, and they don't like to leave lists. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 03:59 PM BDBLcommish Top-Five Movies of All Time: 1) Field of Dreams 2) Matrix 3) Rocky III 4) Dumb and Dumber 5) Better Off Dead --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 04:07 PM SeaCats 1. Chinatown 2. Casablanca 3. Rocky 4. Raiders of the Lost Ark 5. Shawshank Redemption --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 04:29 PM Ridgebacks How about we spark another debate? I think the NFL sucks ever since they instituted a salary cap. Teams aren’t cohesive which has created a league of mediocrity. Every week seems almost random. The whole “window of opportunity” thing is ridiculous. Teams have a finite period of time to win because the system pretty much dictates how long you can keep a player. Young QB’s are forced to play too soon because teams can’t keep them long enough to develop. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 04:32 PM Predators 1. True Romance 2. Excalibur 3. Saving Private Ryan 4. The Terminator 5. The Matrix --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 05:11 PM BDBLcommish Okay, I'm sorry...everyone is entitled to his own opinion, and certainly movies are more personal and subjective than almost any other form of entertainment (music excluded)... ....but "True Romance?????" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 05:14 PM Blazers BTW - I am home and still waiting for my turn, so Mr. Glander ... get off your high horse. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 05:25 PM Predators Yeah, True Romance. I love that movie! We're going to find out if it's possible to wear a DVD because I'd be that I've watched it 100 times! If you haven't seen it, you need to. If nothing else to watch the Dennis Hopper/Christopher Walken scene. One of the best movie scenes ever! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 05:35 PM BDBLcommish Actually, I'm not sure if I've ever seen "True Romance." But it sounded like a chick flick to me! I'll have to rent it next time I'm out. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 05:49 PM Predators Objection! Your honor - it was a very difficult decision to make and one that very well may have driven the common man to insanity. How could we possibly have asked my client to leave a list of players in the order he preferred in someone else's hands? The decision on whether or not to draft Torri Hunter will be debated for generations! C'mon guys...if you can't make it, leave a list. I'll gladly hold it for you if you like. I've already got my draft planned out and ready. The rest of us are trying to keep this thing rolling. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 05:51 PM Predators Trust me...there is nothing "chick" about the movie True Romance other than maybe the first 10-15 minutes of the movie. If possible, get the DVD version. It's got most of the cut scenes that VHS does not. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 05:53 PM BDBLcommish Well, if our resident film critic Jeff Paulson gives it a thumbs-up, I'm convinced. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 07:08 PM Black Sox True Romance is not even close to a chick flick. It is a guy flick. Tons of violence. The ending is one of the most violent I have seen. Definitely a great movie. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 08:11 PM SeaCats True Romance is a good movie. And the Walken/Hopper scene Scot spoke of is indeed a classic. I can't remember who directed the film, but Tarantino wrote the screenplay (script, whatever, I still can't figure out the difference), which should give you the idea that it is not a chick flick. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 10:28 PM BDBLcommish Frank Castillo...damn... Guess I could have traded him for something, huh? Looking back, I'm not really sure why I cut him. It was one of those decisions I made back in November and never looked back on it. Anyone else make a dumb-ass decision like that? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-04-02 10:38 PM Blazers Yeah .... I joined this league! :-0 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-05-02 11:43 AM Shark Well, I couldn't even get Thomas or Smoltz at this pick $3m #11).......this draft SUCKS Best thing I did was take TWO $10m players - should have taken THREE!!!!!! Worse thing I did was trade Burks. Should have kept him, played him in LF and moved Jenkins to CF. Would have been a better CF than Finley at $3m. Oh well. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-05-02 04:19 PM fmimes This draft is now officially called "The Great Inertia." I'm happy that I only have two more picks to make before my cash runs out!!! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-05-02 05:47 PM Ridgebacks The Great Inertia? What are you talking about, we've already had 4 picks in 9 hours. This is breakneck speed compared to some of the days we've had. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-05-02 06:03 PM BDBLcommish Chris Luhning - I don't suppose that Tony left more than one pick for you today?? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-05-02 10:19 PM Undertakers I'm a bit late to the discussion...but I've never seen True Romance! I'm a big Christopher Walken fan...so I'll have to watch that real soon. Top 5 movies of all-time 1) Shawshank Redemption 2) The Empire Strikes Back 3) Saving Private Ryan 4) Matrix 5) Memento My 3 sleeper movies...Being John Malkovich, The Zero Effect and Noises Off...highly recommend all 3. I'll let everyone know when I have watched True Romance! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-05-02 11:06 PM Mike S./Rocks Chasing Amy has to be on someone's all-time list! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 01-06-02 10:40 AM BDBLcommish I thought this was interesting: Tom DiStefano, earlier this week: "The whole “window of opportunity” thing (in the NFL) is ridiculous. Teams have a finite period of time to win because the system pretty much dictates how long you can keep a player. Young QB’s are forced to play too soon because teams can’t keep them long enough to develop." Peter Gammons, today: "But in baseball, unlike the National Football League, competence only goes so far; otherwise, we wouldn't be worried about the window creeping closed on a young team like the Oakland Athletics." I think it's funny that Gammons thinks the window of opportunity is creeping closed for the A's. Oakland has been a playoff-caliber team for three years straight, and has Tim Hudson, Barry Zito, Mark Mulder, Eric Chavez, Ramon Hernandez and Miguel Tejada all locked up through the middle of this decade, yet somehow what is sure to be a TEN-YEAR run of competitiveness isn't enough! I'm starting to worry about all baseball writers lately. It seems as though Bud Selig is launching a personal campaign toward writers, trying to get them on board with this whole "competitive imbalance" thing so that they'll sway the fans over to the owners side. Even Rob Neyer is sounding very pro-owner/anti-player lately. Or maybe I'm just imagining it. Check out this article if you want to read more about this theory.
