November 1, 2002 Salem Pen Shuts Down Stamford Attack SALEM, NH - Like Game One starter Brad Penny, Game Two starter Rolando Arrojo picked a really bad time to suffer through his worst start of the season. Arrojo racked up 80 pitches through just 2 2/3 innings, walking four and giving up three hits. Fortunately for Salem, his teammates in the bullpen came to work today, and were able to rescue Arrojo from a third inning jam and shut down the powerful Stamford offense the rest of the way. A two-run blast by Sammy Sosa off Stamford starter Roger Clemens gave the Cowtippers a first inning lead today. The Zoots tied the score in the third thanks to an error by normally sure-handed Salem shortstop David Eckstein, which led to an RBI double by Game One hero Jim Edmonds. Brian Daubach then plated another run with a fielder's choice grounder to second with the bases loaded. After a walk to Charles Johnson loaded the bases yet again, Arrojo was lifted in favor of Chad Fox, who got the ever- dangerous Chris Gomez to line out to second for the final out. In the Salem half of the fourth, Lance Berkman drew a one out walk, then scored all the way from first on a double by Robin Ventura. That run gave Salem a 3-2 lead, which would be today's final score. After Arrojo left, the Salem bullpen was outstanding. Fox ran into some trouble in the fifth, serving up a leadoff double to Edmonds, then walking the next batter. But he was able to wriggle out of that jam by retiring Trot Nixon, Brian Daubach and Charles Johnson in order. Steve Karsay, Randy Choate and Corey Bailey then finished off the final four innings without allowing a hit or a run. "This is the best I've seen this bullpen pitch all year," gushed Salem pitching coach Rick Reuschel. "Rolo was having some trouble early on, and our guys in the pen came in and helped him out. That's what teamwork is all about. It's a beautiful thing when it works like it did today." Salem now leads the Division Series two games to none as the series shifts to Stamford after a day off.
