Game One recap, by Tom DiStefano: Schilling vs Pedro. I have to be REALLY CAREFUL with my starters this series as I really only have 3 of them. As a result, I have a number of scenarios played out in my head. I figure I’m ready for every circumstance. So in the top of the third, it starts RAINING. And raining, and raining. Needless to say, I wasn’t prepared for THIS. So Pedro and Schilling both have to come out (Schilling having already given up a run while Pedro was cruising with 7 k’s in 2.2 innings). From there it became a battle of bullpens (of which I won’t win many). Middle- brook gave me 2.1 decent innings and I got to Terry Adams for 5 runs. All said and done, I had 15 hits (including 6 doubles and 2 homers) off of 6 Akron pitchers good for 8 runs and the win. The pitching hero for Allentown was Mickey Callaway (!) who gave me 2 scoreless innings to get the game to Gagne (more on him later). Final score, Allentown 8, Akron 5. Game One recap, by D.J. Shepard: Game 1: As soon as I saw the forecast, I had a bad feeling. Giambi leads off the 2nd with a solo shot, so I'm feeling a bit better. Bad idea. Pedro starts off the 3rd with his 6th and 7th k's, and then the skies open up for 72 minutes. Both starters have to come out. I go to Terry Adams, who made the roster because of how effective he was against Allentown this year. It was a obviously an illusion. He comes on to give up a single to Bonds, but then k's Manny. Tom goes to Middlebrook. In the 4th, Adams gets Walker to tap weakly back to the box. Then the fun begins. McGriff walks. Damian (freaking) Jackson with his second hit already sends him to 2nd. LoDuca doubles them both in. Middlebrook scores LoDuca with a single, and I get the pen going. I guess he just needed some inspiration as he gets Spivey to hit into inning-ending DP. In the bottom of the 4th, Burks hits a two-out HR to make it 4-2. Adams goes back out for the 5th, but Weber is getting ready. Bonds hits a double in between a Koskie ground out and a Manny k. Walker then singles in Bonds, and I go to Weber. Weber gives up a RBI double to McGriff and it's now 5-2. Rolen leads off the bottom half with a solo shot. Alomar singles and Weber moves him over. Vizcaino follows with a double and it's now 5-4. Tom goes to Rodriguez, who gets the last two outs. Weber gives up a one-out solo shot to PH Craig Wilson, a double to Spivey, gets Koskie to ground out, and then intentionally walks Bonds. Koch comes in and gives up an RBI single to Manny before k'ing Walker to end it. Hendrickson come in and promptly hits Giambi and gives up a one-out single to Varitek. Rolen then hits one down to McGriff, who boots it to load them up. I send up Hidalgo, Tom counters by bringing in Durocher, and I go to Garcia. He really gets a hold of one, but to dead center. Sac fly. Greer then PH and k's to end the threat. 7-5 after 6. I go to Shields who gives me two scoreless, and Tom gets two perfect from Callaway. Way Back Embree gives up a PH HR to Lugo in the 9th. 8-5. Gomez gets a one-out double off of Gagne. Vizcaino hits a line shot down the right field line, but McGriff snags it to end the game with Bernie on deck.
