November 8, 2001 Chicago Crushes Kansas 18-8 KANSAS - For the first time this series, longball-loving Kansas fans finally got to see some balls launched out of the Fields of Tombstone park. Unfortunately for them, those balls came off the bats of Chicago Black Sox hitters. The Black Sox hit six homers today en route to an 18-8 whitewashing of the Kansas Law Dogs in Game Five of this Division Series. Nomar Garciaparra, Carlos Delgado, Richard Hidalgo, Todd Hundley, Scott Rolen and Roger Cedeno all went deep for Chicago, while David Segui provided the only moonshot for Kansas. Kansas jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first on a Jermaine Dye RBI double and Segui's two-run blast. Cal Eldred, getting the starting nod from Kansas manager Chris Luhning today, allowed eight runs (seven earned) on three hits and five walks through 1 2/3 innings. After cruising through a perfect first inning, Eldred yielded a total of five walks and two homers in the second inning. He then gave way to Dan Reichert, who served up a two-run single to the first batter he faced and another two-run single to the second batter he faced. By the time it was all over, Chicago was looking at a 9-3 lead. With an 11-6 lead heading into the seventh, Chicago then posted seven more runs on the board thanks to a walk, a single, two doubles and two homers off Albie Lopez, and a solo homer off Mike Venafro. Chicago starter Al Leiter lasted only three innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits and a walk. But his short 59-pitch outing means that he will be able to throw at least a couple of innings should there be a Game Seven.
