Game One summary, by Paul Marazita Buehrle pitched well enough to win (6ip 5h 2r 2bb 3k)...but then started getting into some long counts and before you know it he is up to 90 pitches after six with Wiki Gonzalez (already 1-1 w/ walk) and the pitcher spot up (i.e., sure pinch hitter who can hit lefties). I'm up 6-2, so I go to bullpen. Bullpen just did not get it done. Simple as that. Condrey walks McClemore (PH for Gonzalez) leading off. Justice pinch hits for Wolf (in there in relief) and doubles. 2nd and 3rd no outs. Condrey then hits Rickey Henderson. Bases loaded no outs. He pinch hits Hollandsworth for Mordecai. I counter with Guthrie. Again, this was big decision. I knew he would go with Echevarria, but I liked Guthrie/Echevarria better than Condrey/Hollandsworth...particularly knowing that Thome and A-Rod -- relatively impotent against lefties are up next. Echevarria singles to drive in one, 6-3, bases loaded, no outs. Thome vs. Guthrie. Thome singles -- I was surprised to say the least. I have dominated Thome with lefty relievers all year and Guthrie is dominant against lefties. Now 6-5 and because I stupidly threw home when I should have known I had no chance to get the guy on second, Echevarria advances to third on the error. Now 6-5, 2nd and 3rd. Still, I think I have a chance with A-Rod up. A-Rod has SUCKED against lefties as well. I bring corners in and hope to get K or grounder. Of course, he hits rope single to score two. 7-6 BCJ. Not much to report after that. Slight chance in the 9th for me. McClemore throws away grounder with two outs. Then Dotel walks Jones...and is up around 19 pitches with no one else up in the bullpen. 1st and 2nd, two outs. I pinch hit Olerud and cross my fingers that Dotel might be a little tired. No such luck. Grounder to third. No way I should lose winning 6-2 at the end of 6. If I lose this series, I will remember this game as the one that got away and cost me a trip to the World Series.
