I wanted Hafner and I like Madson, I only took Burks for money reasons for DJ. Really it was just money stuff for me and hoping Hafner turns out to be the next Thome. I know DJ has already traded Prior, Odalis Perez and Rich Harden, but Mulder...man, that's a shocker. Tony wanted to move Sweeney's salary. He saved $5.8 mil. He gets two guys he wanted in Hafner and Madson plus takes Burks' salary. Tom basically gets Mulder and a couple of bench guys (Graffanino and Garcia). Adds about $600k in salary. I get a very nice LF in Jenkins at a great price. Sweeney is pricey and will need a little help at 1B this year, but has is a quality bat this year and going forward. Since I dealt Burks in the deal, he's basically costing me $5.5 this year. With no injuries this year, I'm counting on him being worth his big salary again. Spivey and Figgins can be part of the solution up the middle this year. Peralta can help out somethis year, plus he could be my SS of the future. Parra adds another quality arm to my system. I take on $5.2 mil in salary. As much as I love pitching, I sure have traded quite a lot of it over the years! I felt I could afford to do it though. There's still tons of young pitching left in the cupboard. Cruceta, Davis, Figueroa, Hannaman, Parra, Perez, and Verlander (could possibly be the number one pick in the June draft). Plus a few guys in DuBose and Shields that may end up being late bloomers. And of course Pedro's still here. _________________ Well, remember what you said, because in a day or two, I'll have a witty and blistering retort! You'll be devastated THEN! I'm still completely dumbfounded that it took so little to get Mark Mulder. Am I missing something? Are Jenkins, Spivey and/or Peralta that good? And to get two guys "thrown-in" on top of it?? This one rivals the Schilling trade. They both hit LH's well. (889 and 878 OPS respectively) Graffanino is useless against RH's (510 OPS), Spivey isn't great but I'll be able to use him occasionally (697 OPS). Graffanino plays 2B,SS, and 3B; Spivey just plays 2B. Spivey has 115 more AB's. Graffanino is $1mil, Spivey $1.5. Graffanino isn't really that big of a loss for me. Spivey fits better. No need to hope I get a 2B in the auction now. Garcia and Peralta. Garcia is a spare OF. 811 OPS against RH's, useless against LH's (415 OPS). His deal is for $1.1 this year, and then he's done. With Jenkins coming here, I didn't really need him. Tom asked for him back to cover the OF AB's he lost. Peralta looks to be Cleveland's SS of the future. He got rushed last year after Vizquel's injury, and didn't embarrass himself. From watching him all the time, you could see the improvement as the year went on. He'll be useful this year with a 768 OPS against LH's. He doesn't turn 22 until next May, and had a .281/.343/.457 line in AA at 20. There's a lot to like there. Plus, with Tejada signing with the O's, maybe those Vizquel to Seattle rumors start heating up again. Again, Garcia isn't a big loss. Peralta has some upside. That just leaves Mulder and Jenkins. Mulder is a talented pitcher. Deal runs through this year and next ($2.1 and $3.1). Batters hit .259/.300/.386 overall off him. (675 and 689 splits). Coming off a hip injury. I believe you made an eerily similar comparison between him and Britt Burns earlier this year. Jenkins. $2 mil salary with an option. Hit .295/.375/.538 in 487 AB's. VG/VG in LF. 1007 OPS against RH's. I'd say that's all pretty good. Do you think that Mulder/Jenkins is all that lopsided? It looks pretty even to me. I guess it depends on what you're looking for. A good starter or a slugging OF. I feel that I'll always be able to churn out pitchers, so I'm willing to deal them for hitters. Anyway, that's the way I looked at this part of the big trade. Call me crazy, but I doubt there will be many who will agree that "this one rivals the Schilling trade". _________________ Well, remember what you said, because in a day or two, I'll have a witty and blistering retort!
